Christie Asked Cuomo to Curtail Bridge Inquiry

The Wall Street Journal reported last month that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) complained in a private phone call the week of Dec. 12, 2013, to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) that executive director Patrick Foye of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was pressing too hard to get to the bottom of why George Washington Bridge lanes has been closed. Joshua Marshall of the liberal site TPM writes, "Did this call really take place and did Christie really tell Cuomo to rein in Foye? If he did, I do not see how that doesn't gravely undermine the credibility of the story Christie told in his epic press conference on Thursday. When an issue rises up to the governor to governor level, it's something pretty important."

Don't Pick Up Abandoned Purses, You Might Find a Snake in One

Notorious prankster Roman Atwood recently took to the streets again, this time to scare the pants off some curious passerby and, of course, upload their reactions to his YouTube account. The idea is as simple as it is pure evil: Put a rubber snake in abandoned purse and see what happens when someone tries to pick it up. The 'tough as nails' medics on Ukraine's bloody front lines

ARTEMIVSK, Ukraine – When Natalia Nazar got the call that she was needed at Donetsk Airport to tend to Ukrainian soldiers wounded in battle last month, she raced to the heart of the hottest fight this nine-month-long war has seen. "I didn’t think about anything other than the guys who need my help," she says. See also: Quiet Ukrainian town prepares to fight — or flee — as war creeps to its doorstep There, amid the smoldering rubble and a raging tank battle, Nazar found a soldier who had been so badly maimed she was sure she would have to perform a battlefield amputation of his butchered right arm in order to save his life — all the while dodging shrapnel from exploding artillery shells. Report: Benefit of NSA Spying Is 'Overblown'

The National Security Agency's controversial PRISM and phone metadata programs had a "minimal" contribution in the investigation of 225 terrorism cases, a new study finds. This directly contradicts claims made by President Barack Obama , NSA Chief Gen. Keith Alexander and countless other U.S. officials who insisted both programs had been crucial in fighting and stopping terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. See also: NSA Snooping Matters, Even If You Have 'Nothing to Hide' "We know of at least 50 threats that have been averted because of this information," Obama said at an event in Germany in June. Months later, Alexander said the two programs helped foil 54 attacks . The phone metadata program played a role in stopping 12 of those "terrorist activities," and PRISM contributed in stopping 53 of the 54 attacks, the outgoing NSA chief said at the Black Hat security conference in August Read more... If Office Hits The iPad, Even Fewer People Would Buy A Surface

Remember this ad ? The ad where Microsoft attempts to position the iPad as a chopstick-playing toy and the Surface as a PowerPoint-editing machine? Yeah, that’s why we can’t have nice things. Microsoft just released Office the the iPhone . It lets users edit any Word, Excel or PowerPoint document. As the oh-so-catchy name states, Office Mobile for Office 365 subscribers is Office Mobile for Office 365 subscribers only, meaning the app is essentially $100 a year. It’s not “Office for iOS.” It’s just a way to open and partially edit Office files for those saps paying for Microsoft’s pricey cloud platform. Judging from the screenshots, it looks like a quality application. It supports rich media content like charts, animations, SmartArt graphics and shapes. And since it works through MS’ cloud service, all changes saved on the phone updates the original, too. But forget about a native iPad app. Microsoft can’t kill the only legitimate selling point of its struggling Surface tablet. Microso...

Rex Gives Your Robot A Brain

Thanks to microcontrollers and mini computers it’s become far easier to build intelligent robots. But, until recently, you’ve had to jury-rig most of your off-the-shelf components to work in unison. That’s why Rex, a new “robot brain” is so important. Like Hardware Battlefield finalist ModBot , Rex offers one important part of your robot project and streamlines the process of implementing intelligence into your robotic projects. Created by former Carnegie Mellon Master’s students Mike Lewis and Kartik Tiwarti, Rex is a cross between a Raspberry Pi and an Arduino. Not unlike Udoo before it, Rex allows hobbyists to add powerful hardware control I/O to a powerful on-board processor without connecting multiple shields together with various tools. “It’s designed specifically for robots,” said Lewis. “It’s a higher price than the RPi, but the experience of building a robot is less of a pain – no hassles for wiring, it has built-in battery inputs, and it boots up directly into a robot progra...
