A research team at the University of Texas at Austin faced a unique challenge this summer: use false GPS signals to force a 213-foot yacht off-course. The scary part was in their success.


The team from the university's Cockrell School of Engineering developed a custom-made GPS spoofing device that "creates false civil GPS signals to gain control of a vessel’s GPS receivers." UT Austin said the idea behind this project was to determine the difficulty of carrying out such an attack at sea and the possibility of detecting the threat
