Times Square Ball Powered by Human Energy

When the ball drops in Times Square tonight to ring in the year 2014, the energy will have come from pedal power. Electricity generated by six stationary bikes has been collected to provide the 15K Watts needs to power the lights. The human energy will come from six stationary Citi Bike bicycles set up in Midtown, that people were invited to ride this weekend to generate kinetic energy for the ball. The energy collected from the bikes and stored in batteries will be transferred to the New York City power grid.
