Inmate Dies After Oklahoma Botches Execution

Oklahoma abruptly halted an inmate's execution after a vein exploded in the middle of the procedure, but he died less than an hour later of a heart attack. Clayton Lockett, 38, was given a midazolam injection to knock him unconscious, but seven minutes later he was still awake. Sixteen minutes in, his mouth and head moved and he seemingly tried to get up and said "man" aloud. Prison officials lowered the blinds at that time so that onlookers couldn't see what was going on, and Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin (R) issued the factually questionable statement that "execution officials said Lockett remained unconscious after the lethal injection drugs were administered."
