UK Launches First Airstrikes Against ISIS

The UK conducted its first two airstrikes against the Islamic State militant group in Iraq on Tuesday, destroying a "heavy weapon position" and leveling an armed pickup truck.


Royal Air Force jets launched the strikes to relieve Kurdish ground forces in northwest Iraq who were under assault by ISIS militants, according to a UK government website. The UK is now the second European nation to bomb ISIS positions, along with France. The United States and several Arab nations have also attacked ISIS from the sky



"Halting the advance of [ISIS] and helping the Iraqi government turn it back, and helping the Iraqi army and Kurdish forces to do that, is a huge task and is going to be a long campaign," UK Defense Secretary Michael Fallon said in a statement.
