Ike Skelton, a conservative Democrat who represented Missouri in the House of Representatives for 34 years, died Monday at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Va., after being admitted a week earlier with a bad cough. He was 81. Skelton served as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. He went to Washington to join the Hosue in 1976, the same year Jimmy Carter became president. He was a pro-gun, anti-abortion Democrat who voted against the Affordable Care Act and was defeated in 2010 by Republican state lawmaker Vicky Hartzler, who had strong Tea Party backing.
