California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill banning plastic bags Tuesday, making California the first state to bar their use. Environmentalists have hailed the law as a major victory, and plastics manufacturers are already seeking to overturn it.
"This bill is a step in the right direction — it reduces the torrent of plastic polluting our beaches, parks and even the vast ocean itself,” Brown said in a statement on his website.
