Clown costumes banned in French town after spate of attacks

Don't go dressed as a clown to Vendargues tonight unless you fancy a brush with the law. The small town outside Montpellier in southern France has banned people from assuming the comic disguise in public.


The decision by Mayor Pierre Dudieuzere follows a spate of clown-related incidents in the region.


On Saturday, police arrested 14 teenagers who were dressed as clowns wielding pistols, knives and baseball bats, the BBC reports. Meanwhile, a man in a costume was recently arrested after beating another man with an iron bar and a teenager in northern France received a suspended sentence for scaring passersby in disguise.
