J.K. Rowling explains her inspiration for Dolores Umbridge

In case you couldn't tell, J.K. Rowling isn't exactly a fan of Dolores Umbridge


The pink-wearing, kitten-enthusiast torturer from Rowling's Harry Potter series was explored at length by the author in her latest essay for Pottermore. Rowling revealed that the character stemmed from one of her instructors whom she "disliked intensely on sight."



"I particularly recall a tiny little plastic bow slide, pale lemon in colour that she wore in her short curly hair," Rowling writes. "I used to stare at that little slide, which would have been appropriate to a girl of three, as though it was some kind of repellent physical growth." Read more...
