New study warns world is facing sixth great extinction

May 2014 – ECOLOGY – Species of plants and animals are becoming extinct at least 1,000 times faster than they did before humans arrived on the scene, and the world is on the brink of a sixth great extinction, a new study says. The study looks at past and present rates of extinction and finds a lower rate in the past than scientists had thought. Species are now disappearing from Earth about 10 times faster than biologists had believed, said the study’s lead author, biologist Stuart Pimm of Duke University. “We are on the verge of the sixth extinction,” Pimm said from research at the Dry Tortugas. “Whether we avoid it or not will depend on our actions.” The work, published Thursday by the journal Science, was hailed as a landmark study by outside experts. Pimm’s study focused on the rate, not the number, of species disappearing from Earth. It calculated a “death rate” of how many species become extinct each year out of 1 million species. Liberal Blogger Kevin Drum Fighting Cancer

Kevin Drum, a liberal blogger for Mother Jones , revealed in a post Friday that he's undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma, a cancer of blood plasma cells. Drum writes, "I'm young, I'm not displaying either anemia or kidney problems, and treatments have improved a lot over the past decade. So my short-term prognosis is pretty positive. ... My oncologist thinks I have a very good chance of complete remission." The 56-year-old began blogging in 2003 for his own CalPundit site, then moved to Washington Monthly in 2004 and Mother Jones four years later.

For the past week or so I’ve been hanging out at Penn State University for its second annual Startup Week , an educational get-together of startup founders and entrepreneurs spearheaded by Weebly CEO (and Penn State alum) David Rusenko. The idea is simple enough: to give students some crucial insight into what it means to be a startup founder, and hopefully inspire some to take a chance on an idea they believe in. Those Penn State students have been on the receiving end of startup wisdom from the likes of Weebly’s Rusenko, Reddit/Hipmunk co-founder Steve Huffman, Exec founder Justin Kan, and Scribd/Parse co-founder Tikhon Bernstam just to name a few, but there’s only so much fun to be had by just listening to tales of startup glory. Facebook Security Bug Exposed Personal Account Information, Emails And Phone Numbers, Six Million Accounts Affected

A Facebook security bug exposed users’ personal contact information (email or phone number) to other users who were connected to them; the bug has affected six million accounts. “When people upload their contact lists or address books to Facebook, we try to match that data with the contact information of other people on Facebook in order to generate friend recommendations,” the security team wrote in a blog post published today . “Because of the bug, some of the information used to make friend recommendations and reduce the number of invitations we send was inadvertently stored in association with people’s contact information as part of their account on Facebook,” the post continued. “As a result, if a person went to download an archive of their Facebook account through our Download Your Information (DYI) tool, they may have been provided with additional email addresses or telephone numbers for their contacts or people with whom they have some connection.” A Facebook spokesperson tells...
